Looking at my overall scores of the “Competencies Self-Assessment Inventory” (Hellriegel, Slocum p.27) one may say that I am almost perfect but, taking a closer look at the individual scores I will beg the difference. The scores on Managing Self Competency and Communication Competency tell me that there is a lot to learn and change about myself and I hope that this course will provide me with the tools and knowledge to do so. Two gray areas in my Self Competency are in “not self-promoting” and recovering “quickly from failure, including learning from mistakes” because I do not like to put myself on a pedestal -I wait for others to do so, and I do not deal well with failure. In the Communication Competency I listen actively to all parties but I do tend to be judgmental.

On the Teams and Change Competency my scores are higher. I consider myself a team player and I adopt well to changes because life is a continuous change but, I do not accept members of the team not to pull their weight or take advantages of me, and I do not have too much passion with complainers about the changes.

My highest scores are in Diversity, Ethics and Across Cultures Competency which do not surprise me. Life forced me to change culture overnight and forced me to learn and accept the new one in the same amount of time that the change occurred. I will say that only a person with good morals and ethics and one that is ready to “recognize and embrace similarities and differences among nations and cultures (Hellriegel, Slocum p.29) is able to thrive and grow in a new culture and make its name recognized by leaders of a community. I worked hard for the 26 years since I came in the States – held 3 jobs, raised an educated child with good ethics and morals and I found time to volunteer in the community and educate others to embrace different cultures.
