MEMORANDUM

To: Operations Manager

From: Lead Surgeon

Date: March11, 2016

Subject: Heart Transplant

This morning of March 11, 2016 at 0700 hours, I received word of an available heart. After further review of each matching candidates, I have decided that the 12 year young lady named Lisa will be receiving this heart. Lisa loves to read and participate in activities a girl her age. Lisa is the only child in the family and her parents cannot bear more children. Even with Lisa receiving this heart she has a high chance of not making it to the age of 20. This young lady has suffered many health issues in her short life due to various viral infections and lupus-like immune deficiency. Lisa’s heart was damaged last year during a nasty bout with pneumonia. The other candidates that were taken into consideration for this donor heart are: Jerry, a 55 year old male and Ozzie a 38 year old male.

Jerry is a mid-level manager and 5 years short of his retirement eligibility. The reason why I chose not to pick Jerry, as we know Jerry needs a heart. Jerry’s heart was damaged by steroid use earlier in life from is bodybuilding days. His wife and three children would be put in a tough spot financially, if Jerry passes. Currently Jerry’s wife does not have an education above high school level and is a stay at home mom. If Jerry receives this heart it will add another 10 to 15 years to his life. I feel is we continue the treatment that Jerry is currently going through, he is better able to wait for another donor heart.

Ozzie is a single man with no family. His heart damage is through self-inflected wounds, such as the use of cocaine along with many other drugs. Ozzie has lived homeless for at least a decade. In recent months, he has become involved with troubled teens and has provided the wisdom about life and drugs. He has signed a contract with the local charity that brought him to the hospital; that he continues to mentor for at least one year if he gets the...
