Danielle Moiren Art 100 40 Mr. Strickland Art Museum Assignment Coming back from Lafayette, Louisiana to Mobile, Alabama after visiting my brother, I decided to take a detour to New Orleans and visit the New Orleans Museum of Art. Located within the City Park district, it was established in 1911 as the Delgado Museum of Art. At the age of 71 Isaac Delgado, a wealthy sugar broker, wrote to the City Park Board about his intention to build an art museum in New Orleans. Sadly, he did not attend the opening due to medical issues; he died soon after on January 4, 1912. Walking up to the museum, I was met with a smaller replica of the New York Museum of Natural History. Seeing, as the museum wasn’t hosting a particular collection during my visit, I had walked around admiring their vast collection of 40,000 pieces of art, only choosing three: A portrait of Marie Antoinette, Queen of France, a portrait of Marie Angélique Vérany de Varennes, Mme Georges Gougenot de Croissy, and a portrait of The Vision of Saint Louis of Toulouse The first piece of art I had chosen was a portrait of Marie Antoinette, Queen of France; she was the Queen of France from May 10th 1774 to August 10th 1792. She was executed by guillotine on Place de la Révolution on 16 October 1793. The portrait was painted by Louise Élisabeth Vigée Le Brun in 1788 using oil on canvas. Renowned French artist Élisabeth Louise Vigée-LeBrun was Marie Antoinette's favorite painter for a decade. She also enjoyed the patronage of European aristocrats, actors, and writers and was elected to art academies in 10 cities. The periods of Neoclassicism and Rococo.
