Diamond Wipes International, Inc.
In 1995, Eve Yen, moved to the United States from Taiwan seeking better opportunities
for her daughter. Shortly after her arrival, she opened a business concentrated in producing
disposable wet napkins. This business has grown into Diamond Wipes International, a firm
where “100 employees operate 40 production lines that churn out 3 million units daily”. As the
firm grew, it broadened the range of products and increased distributors. This growth was not
without tribulations. Yen found that although she discovered a void in the market and had a plan
to exploit this void, she was illequipped to take on managing the organization during its rapid
expansion. Through trial and error, Yen determined her weaknesses and took on the challenge of
reorganizing her company and ensuring it was able to take on the additional growth and demands
it was facing. With these corrections, Diamond Wipes International has grown into “the largest
consumer and industrial wet wipes manufacturer on the West Coast with annual revenues of $26
million.” 1
Eve Yen’s Management Style and Shortcomings
1. What leadership style did Eve Yen use with her employees? Describe her actions
that support your choice.
Eve Yen exemplified the “pacesetter” leadership style. Throughout the case, Eve
continued to set goals and standards for her team members and new General Manager and
expected them to meet these goals quickly. Eve failed to recognize that a team of employees are
unable to meet your demands and work seamlessly without first being given direction and a clear
