Fair Trade
Trade has been vital to the development of our modern civilization. Without trade, we wouldn’t have all of the ingredients needed to function as a complete society. So the questions raised when attempting to answer the demands for individual nations like the United States in the global scheme of things are many as well as varied. How will we further civilization through fair trade while also remaining socially and fiscally responsible?
The Federal Trade Commission has 3 goals in mind when creating policies involving the fair trade of goods on the national and international marketplace. Those goals are: to protect consumers, maintain competition, and advance performance. William I. Rothbard is an attorney with over three decades of experience as a business litigator, as well as an advertising and regulatory law specialist. In 2013, according to (Rothbard, 2014) “For its two missions – Consumer Protection and Maintaining Competition – the FTC states that it met or exceeded 85 percent of its performance benchmarks.”
Overall, it would seem that the FTC is doing a very good job in meeting their goals in regards to their primary objectives. Statistics included in the FTC’s “Performance and Accountability Report for 2013” shows that it received and processed over 5.7 million consumer complaints. This is 2.7 million over their expected output goal of 3 million. This would support the notion that the FTC is remaining very active in their pursuit to protect the consumer. After all, without first collecting all of the consumer complaints, how can one be expected to provide solutions to them?
In the same report it indicates that 98.6 percent of consumer complaint cases were resolved either through litigation or settlement. This would contrast to their initial goal of 80-90 percent. There is room for improvement, but 98.6 percent is a solid mark that should provide a...
