In an effective mission statement, it is important that it includes nine essential components. These components consist of analyzing customers, products or services, markets, technology, philosophy, self-concept, public image, and employees. Nike’s Mission Statement is “To bring inspiration and innovation to every athlete* in the world”. The Mission statement is short and simple but when broken down, it does capture all the components of an effective mission statement.

The first component of an effective mission statement is answering “Who are the enterprise’s customers?”. It is important for a company to specify and identify their customers, so that marketing and image will be complimentary to the brand. Nike successfully addresses their customers in their mission statement as “every athlete in the world”. Although Nike was founded in the United States, it includes all the athletes in the world, making their customer range global.

An effective mission statement also includes products and services. Nike’s mission statement says, “To bring inspiration and innovation”. This connects with the products that Nike provides for their customers. Nike brings inspiration and innovation to athletes with their athletic shoes, apparel, and equipment products. Nike also inspires younger athletes by showing superstars like Michael Jordan, LeBron James, Serena Williams, and Cam Newton, wearing the brand.

The market that Nike competes with is other companies that cater to anything sports related like, Under Armor, Adidas, and Reebok to name a few. Nike has to know its consumers’ needs and wants in order to make sure that they are the company in which they purchase. Other companies produce similar products, but Nike makes sure that is comes up with creative and innovative new ideas to keep their clientele and bring in new ones.
