Book Review on The Phantom of The Opera
The Phantom of The Opera is a widely-known book written by Gaston Leroux. Being a
journalist and amateur detective, Gaston was fascinated by all kinds of mysterious cases and
tales. Therefore, he wrote the book and told this story of the phantom.
The book tells the story taking a detective’s voice, who is working on the puzzle of the ghost
who is said to have the most scaring face in the world. And in the Opera, supernatural accidents
keep on happening: mysterious shadow wandering about, people dying without any signs,
strange-acting Ms. Giry...... All indicates that something unusual is undergoing.
Then, Christine Daaé, who is newly found to possess a beautiful voice, behaves weirdly
especially after a reunion with her childhood friend, M. Raoul de Chagny . And later Christine
spills that she has been guided by a voice who claimed to be the Angel of Music. Unfortunately,
Christine should disappear during performance and is kidnapped by that so-called angel! Raoul
begins to investigate and figure how to get his girl back.
One of the shining points of the book lies in its detailed description. “They had felt his breath,
close, close, close to them!...They were sure that there were three people in the box...They
trembled...They thought of running away...They dared not...” From the precise description of
mind, movement and emotion, we can feel the extreme terror raging in characters’ hearts. And
accordingly, we may get the same feeling and are fully convinced that we are there, in the scene.
Another aspect worth our special attention is the setting of the character Persian. Thanks to the
brilliant idea of the author, we have the access to details of the story behind the scene from the
Persian’s narrative. And through these special details, it will help us to have a better
understanding of the plots and give us a more comprehensive image of the main roles.
Though a little bit scary, The Phantom of The Opera...
