American striker Jozy Altidore felt the full brunt of European racism during a Dutch Cup match earlier this year. Jozy’s team AZ Alkamaar was facing Den Bosch when a large section of the Bosch fans started chanting racial slurs towards Altidore. Now “chanting” is a lot different from a few fans yelling, chants in soccer are loud phrases sang in unison that create a loud and clear message to the players, or in this case one particular black player. The chants (referring Altidore as being a monkey) were getting so bad and out of hand that the referee wanted to cease play and asked Altidore if he should, Altidore’s response was “no keep playing I won’t give them that satisfaction”. An incredibly noble move from the American Altidore considering this would never happen in his home country, which had a past filled with racism and discrimination but has been nearly completely eradicated in modern times. So why is racism prevalent throughout most of Europe and especially in Italy?
