Colorado vs. Texas Healthcare

This comparison was conducted to determine the major differences between a healthy

and unhealthy community. This was done by comparing the common health indicators of two

different communities. The two communities that we chose were Texas and Colorado. We

believed that these two states would serve as a good comparison between a healthy and

unhealthy community. Some of the things we looked at were health indicators and their

importance, Colorado’s overall health as a healthy community, Texas’s overall health as the less

healthy community, and the underlying reasons why the communities are the way they are.

We must first look at the common health indicators of a population in general terms in order to

compare Colorado and Texas. The first health indicators are one's relating to birth, death, and

illness in an area. These include life expectancy and premature mortality. Life expectancy is how

long the typical person in an area is expected to live for. This relates to comparing health in

different areas based on the fact that health people tend to live longer. Premature mortality

correlates with life expectancy except it counts the amount of years lost instead based on

statistics. Thus, it shows how much earlier people in a region are dying. The next set of

indicators are rates of common chronic diseases. The higher these rates of diseases in an area

indicates unhealthier people. Some rates of chronic disease include diabetes, heart disease,

depression and more. Based on these rates we can gauge what health issues a region will have.
