Network Design Proposal

Creating a proper network design is crucial to building a network infrastructure that will be fast and reliable while providing a secure environment for all users. A good network design should also provide room for growth to ensure the network grows with the organization. The following network design plan requested by UMUC for the newly leased building in Adelphi, Maryland will provide the necessary guide to create a network to meet all the demands of UMUC.

It is important to use the proper physical medium and networking topology to ensure a fast scalable network while keeping the installations and maintenance costs low. For this reason the network will be setup in a physical star topology and 1000baseT Ethernet networking instead of 10/100 Ethernet which is much slower. We will be using CAT 6 UTP (Unshielded Twisted Pair) cabling which is capable of providing 1000baseT Ethernet speeds for up to 100 meters. This should be sufficient to cover all the offices.

For high reliability, fast performance, the network will be setup using Dell N1548 Networking Switches, which can handle up to 48 10/100/1000baseT Ethernet ports, for each of the server rooms [7]. For each of the class rooms and the computer lab Dell 2848 Network Switches, which can also handle up to 48 10/100/1000baseT Ethernet ports, will be used for balance of reliability, performance and low cost [8]. These switches will be setup with VLANs (Virtual Local Area Networks) for the different subnets to provide security as well as performance by containing broadcast traffic to within the subnet. VLAN security is important because it will isolate each network and prevent one network accessing traffic on a different network. In addition to VLANs, subnetting will be used to divide up the network in different subnets to provide added security.
