“Honk if you love Jesus. Drink while driving if you want to meet him,” this quote is a good representation of why drinking and driving is dangerous. The laws for drunk driving are extremely overlooked and need to be taken more seriously. In order for the reader to understand why this is so important, one has to look at the cause and effect, the lost lives and the legal sw4issues.

Driving a vehicle on the road under the influence of alcohol with a blood alcohol count (BAC) of .08 is the definition of drunken driving (Drunk Driving Statistics np). It is the most commonly committed crime in the United States. To drive legally, the driver can have a BAC of .02 or lower. Drunk driving can have many effects such as legal issues. Most people that drink and drive don’t realize what one is risking. Any one person that gets in trouble with the law comes in counter with an abundance of consequences. One common punishment is probation. This means the person is under constant supervision and has certain restrictions. Another alternative for a first offender, a court could often order special classes regarding drunken driving (Drunk Driving Statistics np). If cases are serious enough, the offender may have his or her car impound. If BAC is higher than .08 it comes with bigger consequences. An organization named MADD, in other words Mother against Drunk Driving fought to modify drunken driving laws (Drunk Driving Statistics np). Lowering the BAC to .05 could save 500 to 1,000 lives a year. When looking at the facts about drunk driving, too many lives are at risk and that is why the laws should be changed.

Every-day in America, 28 people die as a result of drunken driving crashes (Drunk Driving Statistics np). This statistic can be fixed with effort from the law enforcements and the states alone. Many people go to bars to have a good time but decide to get behind the wheel, one idea would be for bars to breathalyze costumers before they leave that bar and if the BAC is higher...
