This paper will cover five processes or tools to achieve more efficient and socially conscious ways to save on fuel costs through aspects that range from tires, efficient engine maintenance, new rigs (tractor/trailer), route management and fleet operating rules that will help the company meet its goal.Companies are always being challenged to identify ways to constantly reduce operational cost. These same companies are also challenged to raise their equipment capacity, efficiency and utilization. There are many reasons why we see inconsistencies. One of the most impactful that has effected the logistics field is the rise in fuel costs. Most if not all logistics companies struggle with this variable on a consistent basis. This is not the only major issue that these transportation companies face in today’s economy. But it is defiantly an important one especially to the businesses that rely on this fuel to be used on a daily basis. These challenges are in the same category as material costs. The more expensive the material cost the less companies will purchase using less transportation to move the product. Transportation effects almost every single U.S. citizen and the cities and towns they live in. For a business to thrive in today’s world they must implement some type of recycling program that will reduce the amount of waste produced by them. Ways for these companies to help track the amount of fuel being used is to have an electronic mileage and fuel tracking system so that they know how many miles were drive to calculate the fuel usage. If a driver sets in his truck leaving it idling using fuel he or she should be charged for it.

Tire inflation is a very important part of cost savings for a transportation company. If tires are not properly inflated a truck would get less miles per gallon and make the travel more dangerous.
