Introduction

For a long time now, animals have been used to study learning and behavior. Conversely, in the recent the use of these animals has become controversial. This paper will exclusively identify a few of the advantages and disadvantages in taking on animals in this area of research. The paper will as well highlight the ethical issues in dealing with the use of animals for research purposes. In addition the paper will describe what a behavioral psychologist must do in order to ensure proper physical and ethical care of their research animals and suggest a few alternatives to using animals in research.

Discussion

There are several reasons why animals are preferred in testing rather than human beings. In most tests, the scientists are usually looking for the cure of certain diseases that affect men. However, instead of using the human beings they use animals. There are several reasons for this. First, human beings tend to believe that they are the custodians of all creatures in the world and can do what they what with them. Secondly, some of the tests involve testing for interaction of very severe drugs. Therefore, human beings cannot be exposed to such dangerous tests. Basically, human beings are more important than animals and it is for this reason that they are not used in tests (Orlans, 1998).

There are two main ethical issues that have been the cause of concern when dealing with the use of animals for research purposes. First, animal’s right advocates have been arguing that the tests done are very cruel and thus unnecessary. They argue that these tests cause a lot of pain in some animals.
