Terrorism and Homeland Security Management

INTRODUCTION

Our department has recently created an Office of Homeland Security for the city of Gilberts, Illinois, with a medium sized-jurisdiction. Jessica, the chief of police has been named as director of the Office Homeland Security and although she doesn’t really have a background or really knowledge of what the requirements are within homeland security, I would like to discuss those today to better help her. I will go over the legal basis of our current Department of Homeland Security jurisdiction, as well as their responsibilities, the legal definition of hazards including technical, natural, and manmade. I will also cover the term terrorism and the differences between foreign and domestic. After covering the Department of Homeland Security and all of their legal terms, I will discuss what Illinois statutes and laws are as far as hazards and terrorism. Finally I will close by providing any recommendations that I have as far as with homeland security issues.

DEPARTMENT OF HOMELAND SECURITY

The Department of Homeland Security was established in 2002, having a combination of about 22 agencies and departments, making up over 240,000 employees. The Department of Homeland of Security was established just 11 days after the terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001. The Department of Homeland Security coordinates and oversees an in-depth nation strategy in order to safeguard the United States from any terrorism as well as responding to future attacks that we may face. The Department of Homeland Security’s work includes the following; immigration enforcement, antiterrorism work, border, emergency response to manmade and natural disasters, cyber security, and customs.
