Chapter 4 Outline
Tissue Level of Organization
4 major types of tissue
1. Epithelial- covers exposed surfaces, lines internal passageways and chambers, and forms glands
2. Connective- fills internal spaces, provides structural support for other tissues, transports materials within the body, and stores energy
3. Muscle- specialized for contraction and includes the skeletal muscles of the body, the muscle of the heart, and the muscular walls of hollow organs
4. Neural- carries information from one part of the body to another in the form of electrical impulses
Histology- study of tissues
Epithelial Tissue
* Layers of cells that cover internal or external surfaces
* Glands- structures that produce fluid secretions
* Important characteristics
* Cellularity
* Polarity
* Attachment
* Base of an epithelium is bound to a thing non cellular basement membrane- also called basal lamina
* Avascularity
* Avascular- they lack blood vessels
* Regeneration
Functions of epithelial tissue
* Physical protection
* Control permeability
* Provided sensation
* Produce specialized secretions
Cell shape and number of layers determine the classification of epithelia
* Simple Squamous
* Stratified Squamous
* Simple Cuboidal
* Stratified Cuboidal
* Simple Columnar
* Stratified Columnar
Types of glands
Connective Tissue
* One of the 4 primary types of tissue, provides a structural framework that stabilizes the relative positions of the other tissue types; includes connective tissue proper, cartilage, bone, and blood. Contains cell products, cells and ground substance.
* Functions of connective tissue
* Establishing a structural framework for the body
* Transporting fluids and dissolved materials
* Protecting delicate organs
* Supporting surrounding and interconnecting other types of tissue
* Storing...
