Kenya Power owns and operates most of the electricity transmission and distribution system in the country and sells electricity to over 2.6 million customers (as at April 2014). 

The Company’s key mandate is to plan for sufficient electricity generation and transmission capacity to meet demand; building and maintaining the power distribution and transmission network and retailing of electricity to its customers.

The Government has a controlling stake at 50.1% of shareholding with private investors at 49.9%. Kenya Power is listed on the Nairobi Securities Exchange.

Institute of Energy Studies and Research

What is today Institute of Energy Studies and Research was started in 1957 at Nairobi South Power Station by the East African Power and Lighting Company Ltd. In 1962 the Training Center moved to its current location in Ruaraka. Initially training was concentrated in line work distribution but extended over the years to include other courses such as electrical fitters, mechanical fitters, plant operators, motor vehicle mechanics and meter reading installation & inspection. To date the institute continues to conduct these courses in order to address the skills gaps within the energy sector.
