The Psychological Case Study
The subject is a 16 year old, girl who is currently in grade 11. She has been dealing with anorexia for about 3 years. There have been few instances of anorexia in her family health history, which occludes her grandmother and aunt, mom’s sister. They dealt with anorexia thought their early teenage years. This is similar to the subject’s illness because she developed the disorder when she was in Grade 9, when she was 13 years old. There has been family and social pressure which can be an important cause of the disorder. The subject had been considered overweight when she was as kid. When she was in grade 9, a group of kids made fun of her weight; they had called her fat. She ignored that incident but soon there were more similar incidences. Also her parents encouraged her to take part in sports or any physical activity so it would help her lose weight. And her older sister is naturally slender. All this pressure compelled her to lose weight. She joined a gym, she went to the gym every day for 3 months but she saw no significant change so she gave up. She was determined to lose weight so she stopped eating breakfast. And soon after she started avoiding food with high amounts of fat and calories. Her current goal is to weigh 100 pounds or less and at the moment she weighs 115 pounds. Some of the stressors in her life are losing the 15 pounds as fast as possible and being judged about her appearance. Her copping strategies include avoiding eating as much as possible and looking at pictures of models which give her motivation to keep it up. Her weakness is when someone tells her you lost weight and you look nice. This motivates her to lose even more weight because she will look even nicer if she loses more weight.
