The population of Dodge City, KS in my opinion is around 30,000. The distribution of ages is around 5% retiree, 40 % percent young families and 55% established families. The proportion of the population that have graduated from high school is around 80%. The proportion of people that have college degree is around 20%. The closest military facility to Dodge City is McConnell Airforce Base in Wichita, KS. The major employers in this area is Cargill and National Beef, they both employ over 2000 people each. The status of women in Dodge City is what you would find in any other town in America. The mayor of Dodge City is female. The local school board also has female members.
According to the U.S. Census Bureau’s website the population of Dodge City in 2015 is around 28,711. The population percentage of 18 and under is around 42.1% and 8.9% for 65 and older. The majority race is Hispanic at 57.5% followed by White at 37.2% and Black is 2.5%. The female population is around 48.6%. High School graduation for people 25 and over is around 64.2% and people with bachelor’s for people 25 and over is around 15.9%.
My historical research over Dodge City comes from website Legends of America. Dodge City was established in 1871 when a rancher by the name of Henry A. Sitler constructed a three room sod house five miles east of Fort Dodge. In 1872 the Atchison, Topeka & Santa Fe arrived in Dodge City, which initiated a tremendous growth spurt for the city. In the early years of Dodge City there was initially no law enforcement. With the lack of law enforcement fights would ensue in the saloons and people would die and where buried with their boots on and where buried at Boot Hill cemetery. Boot Hill Cemetery was used until 1878. During the next few years Dodge City was known as the Buffalo capital of the west because in its heyday it shipped around 1.5 million hides of buffalo.
