Persuasion with Purpose
A good advertisement has the power of persuasion. It encourages consumers to buy a product or to change a life. The art of persuasion lies however not in repetitive viewing of the same topic but on how the message portrayed is able to connect with the emotions, interest and attention of the general public. Take my topic as an example, we are no strangers to the deadliness of smoking, may it be second-hand smoking or first-hand smoking. There are many advertisements around since they first discovered the deteriorating effects smoking does to one’s body, but only a few truly forces a smoker to re-evaluate his actions. Both ads have a common goal: to stop smoking among the people nationwide and worldwide. Therefore, effective advertisement can be achieved when an ad connects to the emotions, logical and ethical appeal of the viewers. Comparing the ads, the CDCs ad that presents the patients testimony makes better emotional and logical appeals compared to the FDAs ad about a teenage girl narrating about smoking but the latter ad has better ethical appeals as it demonstrates how smokers are getting younger and younger despite the age restriction to buy a pack of cigarettes.
Analyzing from the pathos angle, the advertisement by the FDAs which is about 32 seconds long, although it is short and precise, it lacks emotional appeal which was aimed to prevent and stop children from smoking at a very young age. It portrays a high school teenage girl named Allison talking about smoking as if it were a person that has a personality of its own, which is true. She narrates how irritating it was that ‘He’ was demanding and needy, that ‘He’ was rude and interrupts her daily life. This form of advert though it was creatively simple and attracts the attention of teens alike especially boys, its affect is only instant and not enduring.
