ASSIGNMENT 02
Cindy consumes 150g carbohydrates, 100g fat and 90g protein per
day.
1.1) Energy provided by each of the energy-yielding nutrients:
1 gram of carbohydrates yields 17kJ
17kJ×150g
=2550kJ
1 gram of fat yields 38kJ
38kJ×100g
=3800kJ
1 gram of protein yields 17kJ
17kJ×90g
=1530kJ
Therefore 150g carbohydrates, 100g fat, and 90g protein
per
day
provide
2550kJ,
respectively, of energy per day.
1.1)
3800kJ
and
1530kJ,
Total energy intake for the day is:
2550kJ+3800kJ+1530kJ
=7880kJ
1.2)
Percentage of energy each of the energy-yielding
nutrients contributes to Cindy’s total energy intake:

2. Dietary fibre
2.1) Dietary fibre, in lay-man terms, is a type of carbohydrate from
plants that the body cannot break down into sugar molecules,
instead
it
passes
(www.hsph.harvard.edu)
through
the
body
undigested.
It comes in two varieties, soluble fibre and insoluble fibre.
Soluble fibre dissolves in water and helps control blood sugar levels
and reduce cholesterol. Good sources include barley, oatmeal,
beans, nuts, and fruits such as apples, berries, citrus fruits, and...
