“Superabsorbent polymers (SAPs) are polymers having very high molecular mass and has an ability to absorb or hold more than 10 times their mass of water or aqueous solution. These polymers have cross-linked networks of flexible polymer chains. SAPs absorb water by diffusion on the molecular level as their fibers are long chained molecules. Superabsorbent polymers is commonly produced from the polymerization of acrylic acid amalgamated with sodium hydroxide in the presence of an initiator to form a poly-acrylic acid sodium salt (sodium polyacrylate).

Superabsorbent polymers can be produced using one of three primary methods: suspension polymerization, solution polymerization or gel polymerization.
