CHAPTER ONE

1.0 INTRODUCTION

1.1Introduction

Karatina University was established as a full-fledged public university in Kenya through the award of Charter on 1st March 2013. Situated 15km North off Karatina town, the University aspires to be one of the leading institutions of higher learning in Kenya and beyond. They offer quality education that is in tandem with the needs and aspirations of the global village as captured in our Vision, Mission and Core Values.

Karatina University locality is rich in Agricultural soils and endowed with tourist attractions within the vicinity of snow-capped Mount Kenya. The serene environment makes it an ideal place for learning. This institution started in 2007 as Mount Kenya Campus of Moi University. It had succeeded a Tea Training institute. In 2010 it became Karatina University College, a Constituent College of Moi University. Finally, in 2013, Karatina University was awarded a Charter.

The University has five Academic Schools namely:

1. Agriculture & Biotechnology;

2. Business;

3. Education & Social Sciences;

4. Natural Resources & Environmental Studies;

5. Pure & Applied Sciences.

1.2 Background

Karatina University College as it used to be before it upgraded to a fully fledged University was established and launched in 2007, is 15 km north of Karatina Town and has a view of the snow-capped peaks of Mount Kenya. It also benefits from the clean water running from Mt.Kenya. It is near the Mt. Kenya forest, which has many types of indigenous trees and wild animals.

Karatina University College was established in October 2010 after Moi university central campus was gazette as a constituency college through the legal order 163 of October 2010 and replaced KTDA Kagochi Training Institute, first built in the early 1960s to train tea farmers and managers. The institute was upgraded in 1998-2001 with the construction of modern infrastructure aimed at training senior KTDA staff
