Introduction
This essay defines and describes the concept of gender equality, gender based
violence, women’s empowerment and globalisation. Further, in relation to these
concepts there is a detailed letter addressed to the ministry concerning gender
affairs of women, children and people with disability that outlines the problems in
relation to the concepts identified above.

Gender equality
Gender equality is a term that is open to numerous explanations. Gender equality
implies that the interests, needs and priorities of both women and men are
considered, it does not mean that women and men become similar rather it entails
that the responsibilities and opportunities availed will not depend on whether one is
born male or female Cornwell and De Beer (2004:64).
Further, according to Gender Equality in Ireland (www.genderequality) gender
equality is achieved when women and men enjoy the same rights and opportunities
across all sectors of society, including economic participation and decision-making,
and when the different behaviours, aspirations and needs of women and men are
equally valued and favoured.
An example of gender equality will be equal access to various professions for either
women or men. An adverse side of gender equality will be known as gender
inequality and it can occur in a household whereby as Cornwell and De Beer
