A sexually transmitted disease (STD),

* sexually transmitted infection (STI), or venereal disease (VD),

* as it has a broader range of meaning; a person may be infected, and may potentially infect others, without showing signs of disease.

* characterized by painful sores on the genitalia

Modes of transmission:

* human sexual behavior, including vaginal intercourse, oral sex, and anal sex.

* the use of IV drug needles after its use by an infected person

* childbirth

* breastfeeding

* skin-to-skin contact

 EXAMPLES OF STI TRANSMITTED BY BACTERIA

1. Chancroid (Haemophilus ducreyi)

* a sexually transmitted infection characterized by painful sores on the genitalia.Usually transmitted through sexual contact.It begins with a small bump that becomes an ulcer within a day of its appearance in an uncircumcised glans penis in men, or the fourchette and labia minora in women

SIGNS AND SYMPTOMS: The ulcer characteristically:

* Ranges in size dramatically from 3 to 50 mm (1/8 inch to two inches) across

* Is painful

* Has irregular or ragged borders

* Has a base that is covered with a gray or yellowish-gray material

* Has a base that bleeds easily if traumatized or scraped

2.Chlamydia (Chlamydia trachomatis)

* It can be treated with antibiotics but often causes no symptoms.

* The genital Chlamydia infection may be acquired during oral, vaginal, or anal, sexual contact with an infected partner.

* SILENT DISEASE :That means the disease often has no symptoms except in male: discharge from the penis and infertility.
