London

London is the capital of England and of the United Kingdom. It is the most populous region, urban zone, and metropolitan area in the United Kingdom. It has an official population of 8,308,369 in 2012.

London has been a major settlement for two millennia, its history going back to its founding by the Romans, who originally named London Londinium.. Two recent discoveries indicate probable early settlements near the Thames River in the London area. In 1999, the remains of a Bronze Age bridge were found on the foreshore North of Vauxhall Bridge. The bridge either crossed the Thames River or went to a lost island in the river.

London attracted almost 25 million visitors in 2009. The city offers an array of sightseeing destinations that include royal palaces, cultural centers and attractions designed to appeal to children and parents alike. The Little Angel Theatre is a great family stop. This is London’s only theater dedicated exclusively to puppetry, hosting puppet shows and offering workshops for puppeteers. Another great family spot is the London Zoo. It first opened in 1828 and hosts attractions such as Gorilla Kingdom, an island set aside for the zoo’s gorillas to roam and play, and Blackburn Pavilion, an aviary hosting the zoo’s hummingbirds. If you are looking for more historic sites you could look at Buckingham Palace. Buckingham Palace became the residence of Britain’s Monarchs in 1837, and its state rooms and gardens are open to visitors. Another historical site to look at is the Tower of London was historically used to imprison, torture, and execute traitors. Notable Prisoners include Walter Raleigh and Anne Boleyn, and its “Torture at the Tower” exhibit presents replicas of the instruments interrogators used on their Prisoners.
