Leukemia
Hearing the words, “You have cancer” can be a scary thought for anyone. Everywhere we go, whoever we talk to, many people have a loved one they have lost to or has cancer. According to Medicine Net, Cancer is “an abnormal growth of cells which tend to proliferate in an uncontrolled way and, in some cases, to metastasize (spread). Cancer is not one disease. It is a group of more than 100 different and distinctive diseases” (“Leukemia: Get Facts on”, 2015). Each type of cancer is extremely unique and has its own specific causes, symptoms and treatment methods. Nearly every part in the human body can be impacted by a cancerous cell. Some of them can be cured and others have been killing people for years. The fear in the heart once someone learns they have cancer is normal. Essentially, the key to living a long, prosperous life after being diagnosed is to put in the time and effort to completely understand the disease and how it affects all aspects of the body. The diagnosis of any cancer can make profound changes in the patients as well as their loved ones lives. Cancer is frightening. Cancer cells are not bias towards any part of the body and can vary between different types. For example, blood cancers. Imagine a doctor telling you, “You have leukemia”. At that exact moment a new way of existence has just began.
In ancient times, cancer was not as widely known as it has become today. The number of cancer patients has increased significantly throughout the years. The early history of Leukemia dates back to the 14th and 15th century was it was initially recognized by the Greeks. It was not until 1845 when John Hughes Bennett officially diagnosed the disease as Leukemia. Leukemia originally stems from the Greek words “leukos” and “heima,” The blood cancer, Leukemia, can be grouped into four main categories. Since 1913, leukemia was recognized as Chronic lymphocytic leukemia, Chronic myelogenous leukemia, Acute lymphocytic leukemia and (Erythroleukemia)-Acute...
