The golden era of the domestic piano strived in the early 20th century

In the early 20th century, most people didn’t have enough free time to perform leisure and entertainment. When they did, most would spend time in the countryside or doing leisure and games.

* The piano was one of the most popular in forms of musical entertainment. In Australia, the piano was the most dominant form of entertainment and most households had one.

* Ballads and operas were popular around the world.

There was a great change in theatre, mostly in Europe and North America. Many presentations of theatre were created and developed, such as realism, expressionism and naturalism. Gender and politics were also mixed in with theatre.

* Family picnics in the park was popular; picnics in the countryside was also a popular alternative.

* Going to the beach was popular. Although, people were fully clothed and swimming was a novelty.

* Many toys were simple and home-made.

* Although people had less working hours and more free time later in the century than at the start, they were more active and fitter at the start than at the end of century.

* Film making boomed at the start of the 20th century. Before that era, there was very little film technique and the film was only spanned for less than a minute, was in black and white and had no sound. The Silent Era rose to fame from the early 1910’s to the late 1920’s, with motion picture having more techniques and variations on making films, although it still had no sound and was in black and white.

* By 1910, there were 5000 cinemas across Britain. Home projectors were installed at home for home cinemas.
