Learning Experience Paper
This week’s assignment was for me to describe an informal learning experience that I’ve had within my life. I will then describe this experience by applying the learning theories from week two’s readings to each step that is involved. Stimulus has a substantial role in how we perceive things, how we emerge to be who we are, and how we deal with and react to different events. The learning experience that I will be discussing in this proceeding paper is how I became afraid of heights.
Experience
I realized at a very young age that I was afraid of heights. I also remember being somewhat of a tomboy. Other than my older sister, I was the only girl in our suburban neighborhood, which forced me to play with the local boys. Even though the neighborhood boys would always tease me, they were my only acquaintances. I felt like I had to prove myself to be rough and tough just like them in order to keep up with their coarse activities. One day after school we all decided to play hide and seek. I had the bright idea to climb a pine tree and hide. This did turn out to be the best hiding spot, however once I was found and attempted to get down from out of the pine tree. I lost my footing and fell about fifteen feet, hitting the ground very hard. I was carried home by my friends and then rushed to the emergency room by my parents. I suffered from a broken arm, some scratches and a few nasty bruises. Instantly, I became afraid of heights and my subconscious told me never to get too high off the ground again.
From this experience I learned that being up to high is very dangerous. This experience also channeled the emotion fear within me. Fear is produced by the brain to avoid a potentially bad situation or anxiety caused by the presence of danger.
