Team Effectiveness Analysis

Team effectiveness is one factor that impacts on the success of a venture greatly. Many successful innovative ventures are started by team of people with a similar interest. Their success depends on how well they work together. The composition of a team, organizational context and task design are some of the designs that are used in designing teams. This paper will rely more on team composition. Team composition was found to be the key factor that impacts on team performance. This is because the team members bring different abilities, experiences, skills, roles and capabilities to the table. When all these are well combined, the result is a successful business. Members of diverse backgrounds create a noteworthy synergy for the team but miscommunication and conflict are present. According to a study by Kurtzberg (2000) on the relationship between diversity, conflict and creativity, diversity leads to higher creative performance but more team member satisfaction. Other empirical studies however reveal that higher diversity leads to higher motivation and satisfaction thereby higher quality output from the team.

The composition of a team also includes the team size. Large teams give more output because additional members give additional resources, but the more the people in a team, the higher the conflicts and cases of dissatisfaction and trust issues. Having a team made of 3-5 members is the best team size. The team members should have a common goal so as to be effective enough.

My project team is made up of five people, all of whom are of different professional backgrounds. We have one who is a project manager, two from the military, one has a chemistry background and the last one vast experience in emergency and disaster management, fire fighting and medical emergency response.
