Discussion: How would you describe your “culture of communication”? Is it primarily written or oral?

Communication is one the most important skills we use every day. Obviously, great communication skills pave the way for ones success in all aspects of life. From my own experience and observation, writing and speaking are my common ways of communicating.

If you ask me what skill i want to acquire most, the answer will be impressive writing. Actually, it is hard to find anyone who does not want to possess the ability to write something that gets to touch people’s heart. Mastering such skill is essential for a student like me. Besides writing down all the lectures in my class, i also take note of anything that i discover in my daily activities. Living in a modern technological age seems to give me more chances to write more. The consecutive advent of OTA message applications like Viber, Whatsapp really changes the way i share and chat with my friends. Now I do not have to go to my friends’ home just to ask something. Besides, I find it interesting to post something on my Facebook wall, write a tweet or make friends on Weibo. Now I can communicate everything over the net.

Oral communication is my other frequent activity in my day-to-day life. This mode of communication is very helpful because of rapid transmission of information and prompt reply. For me, oral communication can be either direct or indirect. Examples of direct conversation between two or more people are face-to-face talks, lectures, meetings, seminars while telephone call, video call exemplify indirect one. Generally, oral communication is useful to me. If time is limited and i need quick resolution, it may be better to have face-to-face or telephone conversation. Sometimes, there is also more flexibility in oral communication than in written one. For instance, i can discuss different aspects of an issue and make decisions more quickly than i can in writing.
