A lesson sorely learned

Do you remember what it was like breaking things off with your first love? As for many of us it takes a great deal of time to move on, while others put their devastating stories down on paper or in a song. As far as my story goes, it was a day like any other. I was a freshman in college and I awoke to the sun beaming through my blinds, luckily for me because I was running late to class. I quickly jumped from my bed to get ready and hopped on the bus to campus.

As freshman at Winona State you can choose to live on main campus, which involves walking some distance to class or taking a three-minute bus ride every morning from west campus. I chose to live on west campus to get the feel of “going home” at the end of each day. On west campus there are three residential halls. The one I chose to live is named Lourdes, which looks like something out of a Harry Potter movie.

I am glad I chose to live on west, as “the Westies” grew into one big family. My college days were filled with happiness. I had a great support system, loving and caring parents, friends and a boyfriend of two years, named Trevor. As one would say, I was “living the dream.” Classes were going well and I was confident in what I wanted to be in the future. I worked hard to earn money over the summer, so I could concentrate on my schoolwork.  At this point, I had few struggles or disappointments in my life.

While homework and studying took up a lot of my free time, I still managed to squeeze in some time to workout each day. It was around 7 o’clock that evening in December, with only a week left till winter break. When my boyfriend started messaging me strange texts. He was saying, “Why are you going to the gym with guys?” and “I don’t know if this is going to work.” I knew of his insecurities going into college, but never was the distance apart a big issue.
