Zeytinoglu, I. U. (1993). Negotiation issues for part-time workers: The impact of occupation. Industrial Relations-Quebec.

In Ontario Canada more than 180 organizations employees were surveyed. The employees that were questioned were both full-time and part-time who performed the same or similar job task. The data collected and analyzed was used to determine if the accepted reasons behind hiring part-time workers would be tolerated by the union within the organizations. Over half of the poled respondents disclosed that they did not use part-time help for the reasons of decreased wages, decreased benefits or the lack of full-time workers being available. The most common reason for placing in service part-time employees in a union organization is the flexibility. The flexibility in scheduling part-time employees is the number one reason given for their utilization. (Zeytinoglu, I.U., 1993)

A study was conducted on 117 unions that all had agreements for the employment of part-time and full-time workers in the Ontario area. The study yielded information that indicated that negotiation issues were wide-ranging for part-time workers dependant upon their particular occupation. The workers in a non-professional work field are seeking a cap on the number part-time workers. The workers in the professional work field found it not to be beneficial for the cap. Wages for the part-time and full-time workers was sought to be equal. Part-time workers felt they were being penalized for being part-time. Part-time workers also believe that they should have the opportunity to fill a full-time position should an opening become available as opposed to the organization hiring full-time workers from outside the corporation. I agree that some companies need to hire part-time workers for the flexibility of scheduling. There are many workers out in the workforce that enjoy working part-time hours and have alternating schedules. I do believe if a company has...
