Fish Philosophy

I’ve worked for several years with a small group of people. In the past 15 years we have had gone through many transitions. When you work within a small team one thing that can cause toxicity is when the team is disrupted. This occurred with our office nine years ago when the office manager had to quit unexpectedly.

This group had been together for five years and we worked very well together and I considered us all to be friends. I was the one with the highest sonority so they all expected and assumed that I would be the next manager. The problem with this was that I did not want the position. I had witnessed three managers be chewed up and spit out by that position, to do the job and do it well you needed to be married to the job. At this point I was not willing to give that much of myself to do that. This left the job opportunity open to one of the four others.

Each person wanted the position and each could have done the job. There were qualities in each that if we could have molded into one person would have been perfect. That was one reason we made such a good team, where one would struggle another would be strong and we supported each other. That team camaraderie would soon be tested.

Almost immediately the competition began. I could not believe how quickly they changed. The cutthroat mentality became so bad that the work suffered, which affected our customer/patient service. The regional manager was counting on my input to help fill the position which put pressure on me that I didn’t want.

After a few week of working as the manager and having to deal with what had turned into a very toxic atmosphere I had a private meeting with the regional manager.
