In the story The Last Duel by Eric Jager, in medieval France, a knight named
Jean de Carrouges challenges Jacques Le Gris, to a duel. The duel was the culmination
of years of bitterness and rivalry between the two men, who had once been friends.The
reason he challenged him to a duel is because this fight is to be determined by God to
find out the truth. Jean Carougges’ wife was a young, beautiful, good, and modest
person. Her name was Marguerite. At this age in time like other woman she was
supposed to to maintain a lady like life style mannerism and be loyal to her husband.
The couple traveled to Capomensil to visit Marguerite’s mother in law. Marguerite
stayed under her watch while her husband set out to find cash, he was very desperate
to find some. When we went away to find cash, his wife Marguerite claimed to have
been raped by the knights old friend and a squire Jacques Le Gris. He was a knight
from a distinguished Norman family, whose volatile temperament had more than once
found him involved in legal disputes. Set during the Hundred Years War, this is the true
story of the "duel to end all duels" in medieval France: a trial by combat pitting a knight
against a squire accused of violating the knight's beautiful young wife.
According to the legend, the Carrouges line was born of blood and violence.
Jean was born a warrior. In 1830 Jean IV commanded his own troop of squires
numbering from four to many as nine to rid Normandy of the English. He wanted to
burnish the name, steal their booty, and capture prisoners. In 1380 Jean de Carrouges
found a new wife, Marguerite. She was the only daughter of an old Norman family. They
described her as young and beautiful. She managed the household and helped her
husband govern his estate. She would also direct the servants in their daily task and
