Culture, Race and ethnicity
Culture is the values, beliefs, behaviour and material objects that together form an individual way of life. Culture is both a bridge to our past and a guide to our future (macionis, pg59). According to, the characteristics that culture entails it can be identified in the movie Apocalipto (2006) because of the values, beliefs, behaviours and the material objects that together forms the way of life of people. The type of culture that was practiced in the movie was material culture because of the tangible thing that was created by the members of the society for example armaments. Not only does culture shapes what people do on their daily lives, but it also helps to shape people’s personalities. Furthermore, culture is composed by symbols, language, values and beliefs, norms and as mentioned earlier material culture and also including technology. In the movie all of the components mentioned above were meet which distinguished the type of culture in which a particular group of people belong to. Additionally, all this components have a role in cultural societies such as, to communicate with others, set rules, to distinguish them from others. Moreover, cultural diversity plays a huge role in the world, meaning many ways of life (macionis, pg70). For instance, in the film Apocalipto it was noticed that the society was practicing subculture and counterculture. This is because some segments of the society population were set apart by others and were not accepted within the society. According to the theoretical analysis of culture, culture helps individual to make sense of themselves and the surrounding world. Sociologists use several theoretical approaches in order to comprehend culture such as, the structural functional analysis which consider values as the core of a culture, because it gives meaning to life and bind people together.
