Tamas Dezso: Note For An Epilogue

Note For An Epilogue s a photo exhibition by Tamas Dezso; a Hungarian photographer
i
currently being shown at Robert Koch Gallery inside 49 Geary building. This is an on-going body of
work depicting the transitional period in rural Romania and Hungary prior to the fall of Communism
in the late 1980s. The exhibition comprises of large-scale prints, painting-like landscapes,
abandoned factories and buildings, as well as lives on a peripheral point of view on the decaying
society. With these subjects, Dezso is not depicting the glory of a nation but rather focuses on the
much darker and pensive view towards the communities, lives, and individual suffering from the
downfall of a political regime.
After a timely inspection on each images available at the gallery, a photo titled Curtain ave

me the most instantaneous impact and rather more rapid reaction. A photograph of what seems to
be a direct approach to capturing the no-longer-in-use stage at the House of Culture in Petrosani
turned into something far more personal to me. At first, what captivated my attention is the
purple-maroon curtain that fills up almost 90 percent of the image, and in my opinion maroon is
considered a mysterious color; since it sits in between the bright and the dark. I am rather hesitant
to come to a conclusion whether the lighting was natural or artificial (in this case; made by the
photographer or not) this deepens my curiosity and lured me into the photograph. Once i got close
to the photograph, first thing I noticed is that the curtain itself is velvet, which explains the smooth
transition of the lighting from middle to the edge. With such great detail (and also the size of the
print itself) I started to recall the “touch” of a stage curtain I was once familiar with back in
