Helium

Helium is a start-up company that specialises in the Internet of Things technology space that began in 2013. It started with fairly humble beginnings and was rather slow in getting into the public eye but in the past 12 months or so the company has taken off and now could be described as one of the most upcoming firms that are focused on the Internet of Things connectivity. In December of 2014 it made a huge announcement both in terms of funding to the organisation and in terms of a valuable addition to their executive personnel. The company announced they would be receiving 16 million dollars of grade a funding and also a former Qualcomm employee Rob Chandhok would be joining to become the company president and COO. Qualcomm is an American based global company that produces wireless telecommunications products and services. Chondhok was part of the team that in 2011 launched AllJoyn which is a system that allows device-to-device communication which is perfect for the Internet of Things technology trend as I will describe below. The funding was headed by Khosla Ventures who were joined by FirstMark Capital, Digital Garage as well as SV Angel among others who clearly saw the addition of the experienced Chandhok as someone who could help bring Helium to the next level in the next few years and make these venture capital firms see a return on their investment. (Burnham, 2014) This amount of investment along with such a valuable executive addition means that Helium could easily be put in the category of ‘Rising Star’ firm in the Internet of Things technology trend.
