Social Stratification

In the movie Apocalypto (2006) by Mel Gibson portrays one of the sociological views of Social Stratification mainly because it shows how some of the Mayan slave traders felt powerful over the other Mayas. Firstly, Social Stratification is described as “a system by which a society ranks categories of people in a hierarchy” (Macionis pg. 248). This is why, in the film there were two different types of Mayas; the Central American Mayas who were hunters and the other ones that were ruthless slave traders. Both Maya’s were totally different in many ways because those that were from the Mayan Central American they just hunted for their food and live in peace with one another. While the ruthless slave traders were the ones that think they were way on top of the pyramid of society. Then causes them to attack innocent Mayan community and destroy their places then take the Mayans they have capture for slaves. Nevertheless, social stratification was a line that one follows because it was passed on to the next level of dominance in the pyramid. It was also stated that wealth, power and prestige make one to have great mobility of class system but less status consistency. In the same way it allows those that live in a good comfortable place to earn great things and those that do not have the opportunity to not be successful. Allowing generation to continue as you can see in Apocalypto, Jaguar Paw experiences Social Mobility “a change in one's position in the social hierarchy” (Macionis, pg. 248). This happened because his father passes his position and power to him before he was killed by the slave traders. It was like a tradition that was been used by almost everyone, with this in mind even in the old days when Maya’s existed social mobility was used. As a matter of fact, the category of the pyramid does not have too many capitalist and then they would not be able to rule over no one.
