On August 13, 2013, at approximately 1:38am, two unidentified males entered the Café Breezeway, a campus late night convenience store, with handguns and wearing ski masks, demanding all the cash from the registers. At the time, there were 4 customers inside of the store. While one of male suspect was pointing a handgun at store clerk, the other male was ordering the customers to lay flat on the ground.  Andy Garcia, a customer, who was hiding in the restroom, overheard the robbery taking place and immediately called the police advising them as to what was going on in the store. According the clerk, after obtaining the money from the register, one of suspects ran out of the store while the other suspect had ordered him to go to the back room to retrieve additional cash from the store safe. Just as he was about to exit the store, noticed several FIU police officers approaching the door. He immediately ran back into the store and locked himself inside with the store clerk and customers. Miami Dade Police SWAT Team responded to the scene along with a Hostage Negotiator. The suspect surrendered, without incident, and all of the hostages were freed without any harm.

* Armed robbery that later turned in a hostage situation

* Both suspects were armed with black handguns

* Victims 2 males and 3 females (all FIU Students) ALL un-harmed

* Hostage standoff lasted for approximately 1hour and 44 minutes

* Suspect surrendered without incident

* MDPD Aviation was requested for additional help

* MDPD SWAT was activated

* FIU-alert was activated immediately

* All Dormitories in the area was placed on locked down for approximately 4hours

* Several media outlets were present on the scene
