2.1. Leadership Theories

Numerous definitions for leadership are available in the academic literature. Katz and Kahn (1966) provided a simple definition of leadership as “an influencing act for affecting the organization”. Bass et al. (2006) pointed out that leadership is personal and results from the personal desire to bring about change in an organization through one’s own skills and abilities. The most commonly used leadership theories are discussed below:

* Trait Theories – Trait theories identify leaders as possessing certain characteristics, called traits, which cause them to behave in certain ways. These traits define a person and an effective leader has a combination of traits which helps him to get results. Trait theories help to identify these characteristics of the person. Trait theories that are common in academic literature are:

* Gordon Allport’s Trait Theory – This trait theory categorized traits into three levels – Cardinal Traits, Central Traits and Secondary Traits. Cardinal traits are those which are core to the personality of the person and dominate the person’s entire life. Central Traits are those which form the basic...
