Five Minds For the Future
The world is constantly changing and in order for us humans to survive and thrive in the ever-changing world we have to adapt certain traits or “minds”. In the book, Howard Gardner stressed the importance of obtaining and cultivating five minds that he believes to be necessary and significant for the future. The five minds that he focused on are: The Disciplined Mind, The Synthesizing Mind, The Creating Mind, The Respectful Mind and The Ethical Mind. These minds had been proven to be important in the past with many historic figures encompassing them such as Albert Eisenstein and Galileo. However, Gardner believes that to cultivate these five minds will be even more important in the present and future. In addition, Gardner also stressed to change our current education system; he believes that our current education system doesn’t prepare individuals for the future because of the ever-changing world. For example, he discusses that schools acknowledge and stress the importance of science and technology, but they don’t teach the scientific way of thinking. The cultivation of these five minds will be crucial for innovation and individual developments in the future.
When Gardner discusses The Disciplined Mind, he is referring to the ability to think in ways relating to major scholarly disciplines such as math and science, and major professions such as law and medicine. In addition, The Disciplined Mind will need to apply oneself constantly and continuously to improve beyond formal education. Gardner refer to discipline as a distinctive way of thinking about the world, individuals should obtain the discipline way of thinking and use it as a mean to better-informed practice. Whether it’s in school or in the workplace, the cultivation of The Disciplined Mind will be essential for individuals in the future.
