Invocation Speech 2016

DCON – Key Club

Good Afternoon: fellow keyclubbers, members of the regional and international boards, and all faculty advisors. For this particular piece I was asked a pretty loaded question; “What does Key Club mean to you?” Well, besides the privilege to say that I’m part of the Kiwanis Family and another participancy to cross off my “list”, Key Club means family to me. Key Club means ice breakers and games that turn your neighbour into your brother or your sister, service projects that turn your partner into your teammate, and challenges that turn members into quick-thinking leaders. And like any family, Key Club is one that encourages growth. Even more than one would think and speaking of such, I have an example.

To mention the impacts that Key Club has had on me is a chore in and of itself, but there’s one obvious example of the change it’s had on me. Me. Right now. I’m here comfortably talking to a crowd larger than 15 persons, well seemingly comfortable but I’m taking very short breaths right now, trust me. And I’m doing this for reasons that are both selfish and selfless. The selfless attribute being that this is what my club needs from me and despite my heart palpitations I will do what needs to be done of me to appropriately represent my club wherever I am. The selfish reason being, I took the opportunity when it was presented to me. Key Club is a club of opportunity, every single member of Key Club is given a chance a to develop a part of themselves that needs work and bring the closer to who they want to be. If that is wanting to be a business mogul and having the chance to run for treasurer, running for president to build their confidence in themselves and their ideas or doing service projects that opens our sometimes narrow perspective on the world arounds us, this club is centered around opportunities for growth of ourselves and the world we live in.
