In reference to project management there are five process groups: the initiation grouping of the project, followed by the planning grouping, the execution grouping, then the monitoring and controlling grouping of the project, and finally the closing of the project. In project management these grouping are not referred to as processes because these groups can be repeated within each project phase (Amiryar, 2016).

The initiation groupĀ is the first of the five defined project groups. During this grouping a general understanding of the project is established. This grouping provides the why, what, and how of the project and established clear goals and objectives towards the overall project (Mantel & Meredith, 2012). The two major takeaways of this grouping is the project charter and an initial project scope statement (Amiryar, 2016). During the next phase, the planning of the project, the project management plan is developed. Certain areas such as how the scope of the project will be managed, how costs can be monitored, timelines and time management needs are established, and the risk management analysis is done. Focusing on these areas at this stage creates base lines that can later be refined to accommodate the overall project (Amiryar, 2016). Next comes the project execution grouping. This phase concentrates on how the project will actually get accomplished (Mantel & Meredith, 2012). Choice of tools to monitor the project are chosen as this stage. These tools will be used to validate quality assurance and track the project success or failure (Mantel & Meredith, 2012). Which leads into the next grouping of monitoring and controlling of the project. This phase collects data to aggregate and analyze to predict potential areas that require corrective action. Some of the major takeaways during this process are corrective and preventive actions, recommended repairs, and suggested modifications (Amiryar, 2016). At this point, the team can look to...
