SQQS1013 Elementary Statistics

Group Assignment 1

(50 Marks: 10% of coursework)

INSTRUCTIONS:

1. Form a team of FOUR (4) to FIVE (5) persons and appoint a leader.

2. Each member must participate in completing the whole assignment. The leader shall report any lack of participation directly to the lecturer for appropriate actions (may include marks deduction).

3. Answer ALL questions and show your calculations clearly.

4. Report must be neatly written using A4 paper; soft copies are preferred.

5. The front cover for the report is as in Appendix.

6. Submission due date: 31/03/2016

QUESTION 1 (20 MARKS)

a. In statistical terminology, the large group of interested variables to be researched is called a population, and the part of the group on which we collect the information from is called a sample. Discuss briefly TWO (2) reasons why do we draw samples.

b. Find an article or an advertisement that exemplifies (demonstrates) the use of statistics in daily life.

i) Provide the article in your report and state or cite the source of evidence appropriately (internet/journal article/newspaper/etc.)

ii) Identify whether the article relates to a population or a sample. State your reason.

(2 marks)

iii) State at least ONE (1) variable involved and interpret its statistical value that relate to the article.

c. The household consumption expenditure statistics is obtained based on the findings from Household Expenditure Survey (HES) conducted in 2014.
