Data breaches occur at a daily rate. The question is what type of data is being taken, and what it is or could be used for. In information security, this is the not so new norm within the field and it needs to be addressed as best as possible given the budget, resources, and staff expertise that is available. Given the data from Privacy Rights Clearinghouse can be used to determine what data is most vulnerable, the conditions for the largest breaches, and determining what is the most important protective measure to choose given the data.
What data is most vulnerable in today’s business-both public and private-and within the government? It seems that the most vulnerable data is Medical data. This could be for a number of reasons. From the people that I have talked to within the healthcare industry, it seems that the inability to adapt to the changes in information security. All hospital staff is accustomed to doing things a certain way even after an incident occurs. As you can see below medical providers and healthcare are almost twice as likely for a breach of personal information.

The largest breaches within the medical industry seem to have most incidents occurring with a portable or physical device. Nurses and doctors need to move data between each other and the system quickly so using a thumb drive or having a laptop that is used on a regular basis helps them with their efficiency. That being said if this information is not encrypted-and the data seems to point to no-it means that once that device is stolen or taken it is free information.
Conversely, the rest of the industry’s largest breaches are hacking. Banking information and social security numbers are extremely valuable to anyone...
