LP3 Assignment: Applying Ethical Decision-Making Models.

As a student of NAU I experienced a very unethical issue a week ago involving another student. I had completed two assignments and posted them to a community board. This is where the other person gained access to my work by only posting a punctuation mark. This other person, rather than doing the work to complete the assignment on their own, took upon herself to gain the time and knowledge from me by cut, copy, and paste. This is known as plagiarism and is stated very clearly in the NAU student handbook that it won’t be tolerated.

The people involved in the problem was myself, Amanda Eubank, the student that did the work, and Amanda Howlett, the student that broke the rules. A few other people became involved after I realized what she had done such as, the instructor, counselor, and the dean of NAU.

The values that were broken in the decision making to commit this sort of dishonesty were very damaging to me. It was a very tough one to swallow that a fellow student and classmate would stoop to the level of cheating and exhibit such disrespect for the rest of the class to see. The trust between her and I has been broken.

I had a hard time deciding how to handle the situation. I chose to be the bigger person and leave any personal responses out of the discussion feed. It was simple and clear for me to respond with the NAU policy regarding such issues. Afterwards, I became a whistleblower and informed instructors and personnel of NAU. Some alternative actions could have been to ignore the issue or confront her on a personal level. I believe I am the most affected by the actions of Amanda Howlett. I cannot trust her and am very leery to make any public post, in fear, which her actions will repeat. The most important value in this situation is honesty. Along with honesty comes trust. It is very hard to trust a person after the honesty between people has been broken.
