Leadership is the art of getting others to want to do something you are convinced has to be done. Leadership comes in different styles that help characterize various roles healthcare professionals use to succeed. Autocratic styles, democratic styles, laissez-faire style, and situational leadership are all styles assisted with succession in leadership.

Growing Nurse Leaders: Their Perspectives on Nursing Leadership and Today’s Practice Environment article is an example on what leadership is and how hard it is to come by. Future leaders in the healthcare profession is a vital obligation for nurse leaders. Despite the need, the absence of a sufficient leadership system has been a vital challenge in nursing. The challenge occurred when the demand of growing needs of the three million baby boomers born between 1946 – 1964 will become at the retirement and have an increasing need of health services.

Help, fortunately, is underway. In 2012, an academic-practice partnership consisting of 24 community leaders formed in South Florida. The primary objective was to recruit nurses early in their career into a Master’s degree program in Nursing Administration and Financial Leadership before accepting any formal leadership roles. This gives nursing starting off in their career with the leadership education needed, instead of, “falling into their positions” (Dyess, Sherman, Pratt, & Chiang-Hanisko, 2016).

Nurse leader developments are going through vigorous processes to prepare for effective succession in the healthcare. According to the Nursing Workforce Predictions, there could be a shortage of up to 67,000 nurse managers by 2020 (M.R., 2006).
