Compare and contrast the challenges and opportunities available to immigrants in the North and the West in the period 1865 to 1910.

Immigrants faced as many challenges as they did opportunities, they were afforded possibilities and luxuries that their home countries lacked, but was also faced with the harsh reality of living a foreign life.

[Body 1] : Oppression in their countries

Many countries were faced with inconveniences and distress, thus filling citizens with the desire to migrate. Places like Poland were faced with poverty, while Lithuanians feared persecution. The years between the late1800s and early 1900s, an entire world of people feared for the safety and happiness of their families. Places like Russia were faced with anti-Jewish attacks that were actively encouraged by their own government. In other scenarios, political upheavals led to many massacres, such as one in Turkey focused towards the Christian Minority. Most countries were under a constant revolutionary violence, some form of poverty, or even persecution and racism. These struggles made America a place of hope, a place that was filled with more opportunities and luxuries than they could dream to achieve in their current homes.

With the push of oppression from other countries, it gave more incentive to migrate to America. While men and woman of diverse countries drowned in poverty, America offered them their hand. In 1869 America published a guide book, “Where to Emigrate and Why”. This guide was published due to a large economic boom, which increased the need for more workers. Antanas Kaztauskis, a villager in Lithuania, expressed that he heard one of the villagers talk about their son's successful life in Chicago. This son lived a rich life in comparison to theirs, giving America even more of a favorable glow. Job opportunities were a flattering attribute, but America offered much more.
