For the first few years of my professional career, I worked for the same, high-end, men’s clothing company. I was the youngest person to achieve an operations manager title in a company that has over 500 stores. As the operations manager, I was tasked with reviewing and recruiting new applicants and selecting a new employee. I interviewed one particular young woman, hired her, and trained her myself. In reflection, I realize, at the beginning, I made the mistake of becoming friends with her first and did not make enough effort to clearly establish our roles, with her as the associate and myself as her superior. I later considered different ethical practices in the following situation that may have offered a different perspective and produced an alternative outcome because of that perspective. The lines between socially acceptable behavior and the expectations of her as a member of my staff were blurred. She was with the company for approximately 3 months and she had become an asset but I began noticing she was becoming increasingly tardy, spending large amounts of time in the bathroom, and often was avoiding her responsibilities. I approached her with my concerns professionally, in an empathetic manner but with a stern attitude. She seemed to improve and with wonderful timing, any later, and it would have been addressed by my superior. I had my supervisor watching and observing my performance in order to see how I was handling my new responsibilities.

I can vividly imagine this particular Thursday night when myself, my boss, my new hire, and three other associates were closing up the store for the evening. My boss pulled me aside and informed me that the cash register was short $380.00. We immediately printed out all the transactions for the day.
