How can information technology support a company’s business processes and decision making and give it a competitive advantage? Give examples to illustrate your answer.
Information technology that supports a company’s business aspects is strategic information systems (SIS). These are systems and technologies that combine to give a business advantages over competitors who don’t have the systems in place. SIS in combination with business intelligence (BI) can give any company a competitive 1-2 punch! A couple of easy examples of this are as follows; A business such as the local sams club adding online shopping with free pick up (your order is ready for your to pick up when you come in). This decision was likely derived from a demand. Maybe a survey or trial was performed to verify this would be a successful endeavor. A second example would be using computers, software, etc. to track trends and predict future drops in sales. Having knowledge of a trend would help a company to re-order the correct amount of product/supplies.
How does the use of the Internet, intranets, and extranets by companies today support their business processes and activities?
21st century technology has really changed the way businesses operate. Systems like intranets support companies by helping quick communication throughout and have become a backbone for reengineering internal processes. Extranets provide e-business applications to access inventory databases. Now all files can be kept securely online or through databases and servers, eliminating the need for mass storage on site.
How can a manager demonstrate that he or she is a responsible end user of information systems? Give several examples.
